Jakarta, Kowantaranews.com -The longstanding tensions between Iran and Israel have escalated dramatically, raising fears of a new and more dangerous phase of conflict in the Middle East. Recent events, including the assassinations of prominent figures and significant military movements, signal that both sides are preparing for potential large-scale hostilities. This development could have far-reaching consequences for the region and beyond.

In a significant provocation, Iran held a high-level meeting in Tehran with representatives from its regional allies and proxies, following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the Hamas political bureau. The killing of Haniyeh, which Iran blames on Israel, has intensified calls for retaliation. Israel, while not officially acknowledging responsibility for Haniyeh’s death, has admitted to the targeted killing of Fuad Shukr, a senior Hezbollah commander, in Beirut. These actions have further inflamed an already volatile situation.

In response to these developments, the United States has deployed additional naval and air forces to the Middle East, signaling its readiness to support Israel and protect its own interests in the region. On August 3, 2024, U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin approved the deployment of extra Navy cruisers and destroyers to the Middle East and Europe, along with an additional squadron of fighter jets. This move aims to bolster defenses against potential Iranian missile and drone attacks and to reassure U.S. allies of American commitment to regional stability.

Iran, under the directive of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is reportedly considering a coordinated military response. This potential retaliation would involve drone and missile strikes against Israeli military targets, particularly around Tel Aviv and Haifa, while attempting to minimize civilian casualties. Iran’s allies in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen are expected to participate, making the response a significant multi-front operation. A senior Iranian official emphasized that a thorough assessment is being conducted to determine the most effective way to retaliate against Israel.

Hezbollah, Iran’s powerful ally in Lebanon, is also gearing up for a possible confrontation. Following the assassination of Fuad Shukr, Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah declared that the conflict with Israel has entered a new phase. Despite international calls for restraint, Hezbollah launched at least 60 rockets from southern Lebanon into northern Israel on August 1, 2024, marking the first such attack since Shukr’s death. Israel’s military reported that some of these rockets were intercepted, while others landed in open areas without causing casualties.

Israel has responded with air and artillery strikes in southern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah positions and resulting in significant destruction and loss of life, including five Syrian migrant workers. The Israeli military also attacked Hezbollah fighters and strongholds in the Dahiyeh suburb of Beirut, killing an Iranian military advisor and several civilians.

The potential for a full-scale conflict is heightened by the substantial military capabilities of both Iran and Hezbollah. Iran possesses one of the largest arsenals of ballistic missiles and drones in the region, capable of striking targets throughout the Middle East. Hezbollah, with an estimated 150,000 rockets and missiles, poses a formidable threat to Israel, especially from its positions in Lebanon.

As tensions rise, Israel has implemented emergency measures to prepare for various scenarios. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned citizens to brace for challenging days ahead, and the government has distributed satellite phones to ministers to ensure communication in case of disruptions. Commercial airlines have canceled flights to Tel Aviv and Beirut, and several Western countries have advised their citizens to avoid the region. Cyprus is preparing for the possibility of mass evacuations, recalling its role in aiding tens of thousands of people during the 2006 Hezbollah-Israel war.

Despite the escalating military preparations, diplomatic efforts to prevent a broader conflict continue. Over 20 countries have issued statements urging restraint and calling for a peaceful resolution. The United Nations Security Council held an emergency session where representatives from China and Russia condemned the assassination of Haniyeh and urged all parties to avoid further destabilization. Russia, maintaining close ties with Iran, has called for restraint in direct communications with Iranian officials.

In Washington, President Joe Biden is pushing for a ceasefire in Gaza to de-escalate the situation. He has urged Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to agree to a ceasefire proposal, emphasizing the need for immediate action to prevent further violence. The Pentagon has also expressed hope that a diplomatic solution can be reached to avoid a full-blown war.

However, skepticism remains high. Hamas has dismissed Israel’s ceasefire statements as empty rhetoric aimed at concealing its actions. Meanwhile, in Gaza, the humanitarian crisis worsens as Israeli air and ground assaults continue, resulting in significant casualties and destruction.

The potential for a new phase of conflict in the Middle East looms large, with the possibility of widespread violence that could impact the entire region.
